Dewan Meeting Minutes July 23, 2017
SUBUD GREATER SEATTLE COMMITTEE MINUTES July 23, 2017
ATTENDEES: Honora, Jim O’Halloran, Hadiyah Carlyle, Marston Gregory (ex-officio).
Minutes from June 25, 2017 were approved unanimously.
FINANCIAL: Sherwin had an unexpected emergency so could not attend.
OLD BUSINESS:
Honora is working to coordinate the calendar and is in touch with Hadijah O’Bar, helper.
The Volunteer Celebration is planned for Oct 15, 2017. Lorraine has sent a letter outlining this celebration: the purpose of this event is to celebrate our history as a group and the many people who have contributed to the functioning of our group. The following have agreed to be responsible for designated tasks: Overall coordination – Lorraine. Inspiration, vision, and invitations – Hadiyah. Food – Debbie, Clean Up – Jim.
We discussed the cost and propose a $15 donation per person; no one will be left out if they can’t contribute.
Marston submitted a letter outlining recent projects (see last month’s SGS newsletter). His updates about current and future projects are very helpful.
A Regional Helper visit is planned for September 2017, but a firm date has not been set yet for this visit. Honora will arrange for the visit.
The results of the dewan testing on harmony and communication were not available. There were no helpers present to present them, so we tabled this for next month.
NEW BUSINESS:
Honora will talk to Oswald about setting up an SGS Meeting on the East side. Either Sept. 8 or Sept. 15 has been designated for the meeting to focus on communication and member updates.
A plan has been worked out for the regional monthly phone meeting. Jim will be back up to Honora.
Jim brought up the lack of active helpers at this meeting, and the frequent absence of men helpers in all the Dewan meetings. To encourage participation, Honora will email all the helpers with the dates of the meetings.
Future Meetings: the next Dewan Latihan will be Aug. 6 at 10:00 am. The next Dewan meeting will be at 9:30 on Aug. 20.
Respectfully submitted
Hadiyah Carlyle, Secretary

What a day!
What a day! A lot happened on Sunday May 21. First we saw two new dogwood trees planted outside, had an exciting Dewan meeting at 9:30 (see Dewan Meeting Minutes here…), added a new woman member to our group, and enjoyed a delicious potluck.
The two dogwood trees replace the dying acacia tree that had been invaded by a fungus. Lucinda O’Halloran recommended this variety of dogwood because of its resistance to diseases.
We love to eat. And what a feast this was, featuring two hearty stews, a rich variety of salads and delicacies like latkes and sour cream, homemade hummus, cornbread, roasted root veggies and gluten-free brownies.
Ancestor Latihan for all members
June 1 Registration Deadline Approaching for Subud Canada’s Family Gathering July 14-16
Subud Canada’s Crescent Beach “early bird” registration deadline is is coming soon–June 1. Located south of Vancouver BC, the Family Gathering happens the weekend of July 14-16
All of the rooms have a minimum of two single beds, but there will be a limited number available for single occupancy, so that you can have a room to yourself. These will be allocated on a “first come/first served” basis, so you really need to get your registration in soon if you want one of these rooms.
On-line registration is very simple. Here is the link to the registration package that contains information about the gathering and instructions about on-line registering. If you would prefer to print out the form and mail it with a cheque, you can do that.

Thank you again to Subud Vancouver for their generous donation of $2,000 this year to the Western Region, to help make gatherings more affordable for more folks. Please remember that financial assistance is available. Just get in touch with me, Dave Hitchcock (Western Regional Chair) at davehhitchcock@gmail.com or call (250) 370-1291.
Like many of you, I have fond memories of last year’s gathering at Crescent Beach. Here are some more of the comments about what folks enjoyed:
- “Seeing people, especially from outside the Lower Mainland.”
- “Hanging out and socializing”.
- “The ease and flow of it all.”
- “Hearing about Subud from many perspectives”
- “Being able to do latihan and participate in workshops/circles/informal socialization in a convenient, beautiful place.”
- “The Crescent Beach weekend was wonderful! The weather, the location, the setting, the latihans, the testing, the entertainment and the sharing were fabulous!!”
A number of folks have told me recently that they are planning on coming to this year’s gathering, so please don’t procrastinate, complete your registration today! You won’t regret it!!

Please come–there IS a Potluck on May 21.
But–the potluck event to honor volunteers and the history of our Greater Seattle Subud Group has been postponed until fall.
The potluck on the 21st is an opportunity to reconnect with familiar Subud sisters and brothers and to welcome new members.
Please do bring food; your contribution will enable us to have a bountiful and varied buffet. If you bring a dish with several ingredients, please note them; folks with food allergies and sensitivities will thank you.
There will be an opening immediately after the women’s Latihan, but this will not change the time of the potluck (right after the regular Latihan). After the opening of our newest Subud sister, she and the women helpers will join us.
Connect
Connect, a beautiful new online publication of the World Subud Association, will keep you informed about current happenings, Subud history and more. This, the second edition, focuses strongly on Subud Youth, detailing Basara, the recent gathering in Kalimantan. There’s lots more at: Connection
OUR VOLUNTEERS ROCK!
SO LET’S CELEBRATE ON MAY 21 WITH A POTLUCK.
Please join us after our regular Latihan on the 21st.
You’ll learn more about our group’s history*, and the vital role played by past and present volunteers to make our organization work. Volunteers work on committees, perform helper duties (yes, helpers are volunteers), clean up and beautify our garden and parking strip, enhance and maintain the building, bring food, and lots more. Our Subud House is beautiful and functional largely because of volunteers.
*Who are these guys ?Hamilton Snyder, Sebastian (Robert) Tedrow, Elisha Gullixon and Rayner Burrows in an undated photo c/o Lorraine Tedrow.
If you’re planning to come, PLEASE BRING A FOOD OR BEVERAGE ITEM to share. Everyone’s contribution is very welcome. It helps to create a hearty and healthy lunch for all celebrants.
If you know what you want to bring, go for it. Folks with food sensitivities appreciate ingredient labels on your dish. If you have questions, please contact the food coordinator, Lorraine Tedrow: ltedrow2012@gmail.com or 360-708-2706

And now, for something more current, our wonderful EARTH DAY CLEANUP CREW
“Saturday April 23 there were only four of us: Hadidjah and Marston, Phillip and myself. Given the impending raining forecast for the day we focused on weeding and prepping the parking strip for grass seed. That day was Hadijah’s first time weeding ever! She and I focused on the winter weeds and bluebells. We debated about the bluebells and after much thought, she decided they needed to go as they were in the process of overtaking the garden. She and I focused on two small areas that we knew we could finish before the rain set in. And guess what? We accomplished our goal with great satisfaction. She had a great time and was ready to come back the next day for more.” lucinda O’Halloran
The following day saw Phillip, back again, with Marston and Hariana working on the parking strips.
